5 Signs That You’re Not Living in Alignment with Your Purpose
If you believe in the presence of a soul then perhaps you also believe that our soul has a purpose or life path in which it is destined to follow.
Of course, the soul can stray from this path, but it is when we are on this path that we feel most at peace and fulfilled.
If you stray from this path too far then this is when you are no longer living in alignment with your purpose.
But how do we know if we’re living in alignment with our soul’s purpose, and what are the signs that we’re not?
I believe that having this knowledge and awareness can help us to live much happier and fulfilling lives!
What does it mean to be in alignment?
Living in alignment with your purpose or your higher self means that you’re vibrating at a frequency that matches that of your soul's intention.
This means that whatever you’re thinking, feeling and doing right now is that of your true authentic self and not a result of your ego self and societal influences.
When you’re living in alignment with your purpose, everything has a feeling of flow to it and you may feel as though things “fall into place”.
You feel free to be who you are and like your authentic self shines through you in everything you do.
Living in alignment is therefore, obviously, the way that we’d want to live. Unfortunately though, it can be hard to filter out all the noise from society and discover your core self.
For this reason, many of us aren’t in alignment with our true self. But that’s okay, because with self awareness and inner work you can work to get in alignment with who you truly are.
5 Signs you’re not living in alignment with your purpose
So how do you know if you are living in alignment with your true self or not?
Ideally, you’d have an intuitive sense whether you are or not, but as we mentioned before this can certainly get clouded in this noisy world.
By looking out for the following signs you should be able to get a pretty clear idea about whether or not you are living in alignment with your purpose.
1. Something feels "off"
This is kinda that intuitive sense we were talking about and might be described as a “gut feeling”.
When we’re not living in alignment with who we really are then something may just feel “off”.
It may be hard to pinpoint what exactly this off thing is, but we just know that something doesn’t quite feel the way that we think it should.
A small example of when your intuition comes into play like this could be when you’re at an event and things just feel a bit icky. You know that it’s not your ego getting involved with things like social anxiety but instead you just don’t feel quite right there.
Intuitively, you just know that the energy doesn’t feel aligned and you get a feeling that you’d feel much more aligned elsewhere. This would be a clear sign that this just isn’t your kind of thing and doesn’t match up with your purpose.
Now, that’s one small example… We all attend events that aren’t really our cup of tea from time to time, right?
But what if you’re kinda going through your whole life with that feeling of something being off… what if every situation kinda feels like that icky event?
That would be a sure sign that you’re not living in alignment with your purpose. If you get this feeling regularly then take this as a message to switch something up and make some changes.
It might be the things you’re doing or even the people you’re interacting with. Dig deep and make a conscious effort to evaluate how you’re spending your time and who you’re spending it with.
2. You don’t feel excited by accomplishments
It makes sense to feel excited when you achieve a big milestone and accomplish a goal, but when this goal is not in alignment with your true purpose you can actually feel the opposite… unfulfilled, disappointed, and even depressed.
For example, maybe you get into law school but instead of feeling excited and proud of yourself you kinda just feel a sense of dread.
This would be a sign that law isn’t truly your life purpose and you’ve been chasing something that isn’t aligned.
I actually experienced this myself after chasing a career in psychology. When I eventually achieved the goals I needed to get there I realized it wasn’t truly what was aligned with me after all.
I had to truly look at myself and my life and make some changes to start doing something that felt more aligned with the true me.
It can be scary to reevaluate our life path, especially if we’ve put a whole lot of work in to get where we are today.
But I promise you that you will feel so much happier and more fulfilled once you start living in alignment with your purpose.
So if you feel like you lack excitement over things that you “should” be excited about, then maybe look at where you’re heading and ask yourself if it’s where you really want to go.
3. You’re constantly seeking external approval
When we’re living in alignment with our purpose, we kinda don’t care what other people think.
Sure, what we’re doing may not always be the conventional idea of “success” but it sets our soul on fire and makes us feel fulfilled!
If you feel like you’re constantly seeking the approval of others, the chances are that you’re not on your true life path. How can you tune into your own desires when you’re always so aware of others?
I get this, I’ve been there… hell, I’m still there sometimes now! Filtering out the noise of others opinions is a hard one and of course we want to make our loved ones proud.
The truth is, though, the only way we can start living in alignment with our purpose is if we silence the wants of everyone else and start following our own heart.
Yes, it takes practice, but you’ll be thankful in the long run.
4. You feel guilty
If you often feel guilty in your life then this is a clear sign that you’re not living in alignment with your values.
Somewhere along the line, your actions are going against what you believe in and the two are not aligned.
We may all go against our values from time to time. For example, maybe we’re environmentally conscious but we leave the house without our reusable water bottle and end up purchasing a plastic one because we’re thirsty.
None of us are perfect, and that’s not what we’re getting at here.
However, if you feel like your actions are in a constant conflict with what you truly believe in (sometimes called cognitive dissonance) then this may be something you need to look at.
Really ask yourself: what do you value in life? Tune into what your beliefs and values are so you can pinpoint the areas that you’re not in alignment.
Once you bring your awareness to these areas, make a conscious decision to alter any habits and behaviors that contradict your beliefs so that you can start living in alignment with your values.
5. You struggle to manifest
If you feel like you’re doing all the right things to manifest your desires (pssst… the right things can be found om these pages) but you’re still struggling to manifest, then it may be that your desire isn’t aligned with your true self.
This is something that many people don’t talk about with the law of attraction, but the truth is that if something isn’t in alignment with our purpose then there is always going to be unconscious resistance that prevents our ability to manifest it.
We may think we want something, but this may just be our ego talking.
If our soul doesn’t align with this thing on a vibrational level then we won’t be able to become the vibrational match for that desire.
So if you feel like you struggle to manifest, then there’s a good chance that it’s because you’re not living in alignment with your purpose
Do some self reflection and ask yourself whether your reason for wanting this thing is pure and whether it’s aligned with your higher self, or if you want this thing for some other reason.
It may be necessary for you to let go of certain desires and accept that they’re just not right for you. Know that that’s okay - not everything in life is meant for us.
Now you know the signs you should be able to make more conscious choices in your life that are more aligned with your higher self.
With this awareness, you can notice when you’re straying too far from the path and when it’s time to reevaluate.
